Diagnostic Hearing Evaluations

The audiometric evaluation consists of pure tone air and bone conduction testing. Testing pure tones is done to determine the degree of hearing loss and whether hearing loss is conductive or sensorineural. Speech audiometry is obtained to evaluate the individual’s ability to understand speech at an elevated comfortable volume. Speech discrimination is also tested to determine how much a person will understand when wearing hearing aids.

Tympanometry

Tympanometry is an examination used to test the condition of the middle ear and mobility of the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and the conduction bones, by creating variations of air pressure in the ear canal.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing is is a neurologic test of auditory brainstem function in response to auditory (click) stimuli. The test takes approximately thirty minutes. Two electrodes are attached to the forehead and inserts are placed in the ears. Clicking sounds are presented at various loudness levels and a response is measured on a computer. The response allows the audiologist to determine how efficiently sound is moving through the hearing system.

Electrocochleography (EcochG)

A test that measures the electrical potentials generated in the inner ear in response to stimulation by sound. Electrocochleography may be done to confirm the diagnosis of Meniere's disease.

Balance and Dizzy Testing- Videonystagmography (VNG)

VNG is a series of tests used to determine the causes of a patient's dizziness or balance disorders. If dizziness is not caused by the vestibular portion of the inner ear, it might be caused by the brain, by medical disorders such as low blood pressure, or by psychological problems such as anxiety. VNG is a test used to determine whether or not dizziness may be due to inner ear disease.  The balance system is a complex one involving coordination of the vestibular (inner ear), visual (eyes), and the sensory nerves throughout the body. The VNG is one method utilized to evaluate problems with balance and equilibrium.

Oto-acoustic emission (OAE)

Oto-acoustic emission (OAE) evaluation is an evaluation of cochlear function (the sensory organ of hearing). A normal cochlea will emit an echo when a sound is presented. Inserts are placed in the ear canal and a clicking sound is presented in the ear. A computer monitors the ear for a response which enables the audiologist to determine if the cochlea is functioning normally.  This test is usually performed on infants or young children.

Pediatric Hearing Evaluations

Infants hear and listen from the moment of birth. Good hearing is essential for your baby to learn to talk. Pediatric hearing evaluations can be performed at any age. There are many sophisticated tests that can determine the level of your child's hearing. If you feel there is concern, contact our Audiology Department at 229-435-7161.

Visual Conditioned Response Audiometry (VRA)

VRA is effectively used from a few months of age up to approximately three years old. The child is seated at an angle to a speaker and animated toy. The child is observed by an audiologist for either a conditioned response or other reactions to a variety of test sounds. The patients response levels are adjusted for their age and the hearing level is estimated.

Hearing Aid Dispensing & Fitting

Our staff emphasizes ongoing cleaning and maintenance after your hearing aid purchase to ensure you receive optimum performance and benefit from your hearing aids. We encourage all our patients to come in for a regular hearing aid evaluation and cleaning.

Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA)

The BAHA is a device for patients who cannot utilize conventional hearing aids. This device is a surgically implantable system for treatment of hearing loss that works through direct bone conduction.  BAHA is used to help people with chronic ear infections, congenital external auditory canal atresia and single sided deafness who cannot benefit from conventional hearing aids.A thorough evaluation from both an audiologist and neuro-otologist can determine if you are a good candidate for this device. Please contact our Audiology Department at 229-435-7161 for more information. The BAHA is a device for patients who cannot utilize conventional hearing aids.
